Cursed With A Kinky Head.... Of Hair

Reports of the dangers of Brazilian Blow Waves are on the rise again and just like anything in life, there will always be naysayers and negativity about products that may or may not be bad for you. There are so MANY things we do or eat that cause cancer or heart disease or diabetes. The list goes on and on and sometimes it just goes over our heads and we carry on using/doing/eating, because "it won't happen to me" syndrome. Be that as it may, I was rather perturbed to read this article on IOL News - Toxic Hair Care: Name and Shame call, about 6 Brazilian Products advertised as Formaldehyde Free, when in fact they have five times the legal limit of the carcinogenic chemicals. I guess I was being a bit naive when I had my Brazilian in December 2013, because believe you me, my eyes, throat and nose watered and burned like hell. There was Formaldehyde in it!!! I know the smell - I nursed and we used Formaldehyde to sterilize instruments and for whatever was sent to the Labs for testing. I know the smell - I know how it burns your eyes and throat. We also used to put it on our nails to make them grow, apparently formaldehyde made your nails strong. Whether this was true or not, we stupidly believed it and put it on our nails. As trainee nurses we could not have long nails anyway, so did it work?? I do have long hard strong nails although the last time I had long long talons was the day after Clint was born - I had to cut them, they were just far too long to have with a new born baby.

Gliss Satin Smooth
Whether I was blessed with long strong nails or whether it was as a result of gimmicks and products used over the years, we will never know - BUT, one thing I do know - I was cursed with kinky hair. It is neither straight or curly, just a horrible in between. How we ever managed before the invention of flat irons; straighteners; ghd's whatever you want to call them and of course Brazilians is anyone's guess. I used Schwarzkopf Gliss Shampoo years ago and then it disappeared off the market or I just did not look properly and then I discovered it again about two years ago. I used the white bottle with a maroon lid, so when I discovered it again after all these years, I bought the same one. I did not like it at all and it just did not work for me, like it did years ago, so I never bought it again. A couple of months ago I was wondering around Clicks Stores, as I do, too often than I should and I saw Gliss had a new product. Liquid Hair Repair - Satin Smooth Shampoo - Anti-Frizz; Taming and Shine. I bought it and I love it enough to tell you to go out and buy it - if you have a kink in your hair that you would love to get rid of. My hair is just as manageable as it was when I had the Brazilian, it is soft and smooth and straight, but with a squeaky clean feel, unlike the Cacau Shampoo. I don't spend as much time straightening my hair as I usually do. I just dry it with a hair dryer and run my straightener through it a couple of times and I am done. The true test of whether the Gliss Satin Smooth With Liquid Keratin is as good as the Cacau Brazilian, would be down at the coast at the height of Summer, when the humidity levels are a kinky head's worst nightmare, but for now and in Joburg weather it is great.

I am really happy with the Gliss Satin Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner and it took me 12 minutes from towel drying sopping wet hair to hair drying to straightening in this picture above and it was very windy that day. Sounds like a long time - no not at all, try 30 minutes. I went to Clicks this morning and saw Gliss have another new one - with Marrakesh Oil and Coconut, which I bought and will review it on my blog after I have used it. I was looking for the John Frieda range, which I read about on the Blog Minneola's and Margarita's. I have looked for it at all the Click's Stores in our area and have never seen it - we have 5 Clicks Stores that are in close proximity, but just can't seem to find the John Frieda Range since reading about it in this post. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place, although I do know that the smaller Clicks Stores don't always stock newer products.

I think I am going to give the Brazilian Blow Wave/Outs a miss and stick with normal shampoos - not only because of the dangers of Formaldehyde, but the costs are just ridiculous. Not to alarm you, but I found this article online about Formaldehyde Facts and it is quite an eye opener. It seems Formaldehyde is in almost everything we use in our homes and on our bodies.
