Morning Routine

I thought I would do something different on my blog today and borrowed this blog post idea from Style Unearthed. I don't as a rule follow fashion blogs, I read blogs for the story and not the article, but I do follow Style Unearthed. I enjoy her blog and she makes this really awesome homemade sugar rub, which I am planning on making one day when I stop procrastinating through life, but in the meantime, you can find her sugar rub over here.

You probably wonder why I wake up so early in the mornings and why it takes me two hours to get ready for work in the mornings. I wake up at 4.45 and leave home between 7 am and 7.15. When I read this Easy Morning Routine post on Style UnEarthed, I also wondered why I took so long to get ready in the mornings. I am almost sure I woke up much later when I did the whole Rivonia Corporate Gig, getting Clint ready for nursery school, dropping him off at school and getting to work before 8 am.

This Easy Morning Routine is very similar to mine and most of the products come from the Australian equivalent of Clicks and Dischem, where I buy my products, which is why I like Style Unearthed- no pretentiousness and expensive products.

So what do I do in the mornings if it is not spending hours primping and priming my face. Well I reluctantly get out of bed at 5 am, some days pushing it to 5.10. I sort laundry, put a load of laundry in the machine, pack the dishwasher, make coffee for myself, or tea if I am on a tea binge. I feed the dogs biscuits and give Garfield food. The dogs have food in their bowls from the night before and mornings is bonding time with me over biscuits for them and tea for me. If I have time, I have a 2nd, sometimes 3rd cup of coffee/tea and sit in the lounge, surrounded by animals, whilst catching up on the news via my Twitter Feed. I love the tranquility and silence of pre-dawn, when everyone is asleep.

I then go and shower between 5.45 and 6. My contact lenses take up most of my time, because some mornings my eyes feel as though they have stones in them (because I am always tired) and I have to take my lenses out about ten times. Drying my hair also takes up a lot of my time, because it is quite thick. My face takes 20 minutes if that, in between doing my hair and doing a second load of washing.

Morning Beauty Products

Wow doing it like this, makes it look like quite a hectic routine, but it is not - I promise.

1. Nivea Aqua Sensation Refreshing Cleansing Gel- I cannot clean my face with lotions and creams, it has to have "soap" and water. This cleansing gel lathers and cleans squeaky clean. I wash my face in the shower.
2. Clicks Cleansing Sponges - Some women, don't like sponges, because they can be germ magnets. I cannot wash my face without using sponges. I use a new one weekly and wash and rinse the sponge and air dry after each use.
3. Garnier Pure Active Pore Reducing Toner. After my shower and brushing my teeth, I wipe my face with toner using cosmetic cotton pads. You should give Toner a minute before you put on day cream, I give it as long as it takes to get my contact lenses in.
4. Clicks Cosmetic Cotton Pads for Toner - I like the TLC and Clicks cosmetic pads
5. Nivea Q10 Plus Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream SPF15 - After I have done my contacts, I put day cream on my face and neck and d├ęcolletage.
6. Nivea Q10 Plus Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream - Sometimes I put the eye cream on before my day cream or after, doesn't make a difference - I just dab dab around my eye, but not too close to my eye, because of my contact lenses. Works wonders for tired swollen eyes that have shed far too many tears the night before if you leave it in the Freezer for 10 minutes, then dab under your eyes.
7. Essence Soft Beige Stay Natural Concealer - I use that under my eyes, when they are puffy and have dark rings. Combined with No 6 and all tired puffy eyes and dark rings are hidden away.
8. Essence Cover Stick - I use when I need to cover a spot or two. Yep at the age of 50 I still get spots. Thanks to hormones. I think I have had more spots at 50 than at 15. I have had it for ages though.
9. Garnier BB Cream. I have just started using Garnier Beauty Balm and I really like it. The container states for 35 to 40 years, but I use it under my foundation and helps the foundation to blend and "finish" properly.
10. Rimmel Medium Beige Foundation - I am trying out the Rimmel Foundation and quite like it. It is much better than the Essence I was using before and it is not as expensive as the Revlon Anti-Ageing I used to use.
11. Yardley Loose Powder - I like setting my foundation with loose powder, especially in Summer, when the heat makes your makeup "run". A tub lasts forever.
12. Makeup Brush - I don't have fancy makeup brushes. This one I have had forever. I bought it when I used to sell Valeur Makeup. Clint was only two or three at the time so it is about 22 years old. Does Valeur still exist - I don't know, but my brush still exists. I wash it with shampoo, put some conditioner on it. rinse, absorb the excess water with a towel; air dry and fluff it up when it is dry. 22 years later and it still works.
13. Essence Blush - I don't even use blush everyday. If I do I swipe a bit on my cheeks, by sucking in my cheeks and applying the blush.
14. Blusher Brush - Also pretty old, but not as old as the Valeur brush and I think it came in a Clicks Makeup Set.
15. Eye Shadow - I use Essence or Yardley or Revlon, it lasts forever and I use cheap eye shadow sponges that I buy from Clicks - forgot to add them in the photo.
16. Rimmel Black Eyeliner - I use sometimes. When I was younger I would not leave the house without eyeliner. Now my contact lenses, although I have worn contacts since I was about 21, seem to make the eyeliner smudge.
17. Essence Brown Eyebrow pencil. I use nearly everyday, but not overdone. I over plucked my eyebrows when I was young and they have not grown in 20 or more years.
18. Mascara from Truworths - I don't like the mascara, but it was one of those "Standing in a long queue - lets try this" purchase. Again for contacts, the best Mascara is Maybelline Waterproof Mascara.
19. Revlon Lipstick - I almost always use Revlon Lipstick and Lip Liner sometimes, but forgot to add the Lip Liner in the photo. I don't like Lip Gloss, because I have yet to find one that does not smudge everywhere.

And that sums up my morning routine, believe it or not, it can take less than ten minutes to get that on my face, not counting the washing and toning, because that is done before leaving the bathroom. In between each layer, I dry and straighten my hair. Next time I will do my night routine, which is even quicker. I might just make Makeup Mondays an every week series on my blog, but you know how consistently inconsistent I am, so don't count on it.
